End of Month - Next Call
As we close out May 2012 and move into our 10th webinar next week we are roughly half way through in terms of the time frame we originally outlined.
We have worked our way through some of the more complex issues in primary production including environmental assessments, wildlife and domestic animals and water. While these topics will need to be revisisted and there are a few issues associated with these topics that are "parked" much progress has been made to date. I am hopeful that the pace will pick up as we move to some of the other sections of the document and optimistic that we will still meet our goal of having a DRAFT document available in July.
In the May 29 webinar, discussions on water used in primary production were concluded and two suggested modifications to sections 4.2.2 and 220.127.116.11 from the prior week were reviewed. The modifications discussed are indicated below:
Section 4.2.2 –Water for primary production
The suggestion was made to add language to line 423, and earlier in the document, recommending that laboratories used for water testing should use validated test methods. Language to address this addition will be developed for the next call.
Section 18.104.22.168 – Water for irrigation
In this section the three bullet points were combined into two bullet points:
“Use water for irrigation that is of suitable quality for its intended purpose.”
“When irrigating, avoid creating pools of water that may come into contact with cantaloupe rinds.”
Section on Water for harvesting
This section was modified to address only water used during harvesting.
The first sentence was modified to “If water is directly applied to cantaloupes during harvesting, it should meet the microbial standards for drinking water.”
A separate section was added to address water used for dust abatement. Language for this section will be developed for the next call.
Section on “Manure and other natural fertilizers
Use of established commercial methods for composting was recommended.
The last bullet was moved to the top of the bulleted list and revised to say that raw, untreated and partially treated manure, biosolids and other non-synthetic fertilizers should not be used.
During the next webinar we will continue with discussions regarding manure, biosolids and other nonsynthetic fertilizers and if time permits begin discussion on agricultural chemicals, cleaning, maintenance and sanitation.
